The Czech Literary Centre and the °µÍø½ûÇø Literary Centre are organizing a joint literary evening on June 11, 2025, at the Literarisches Colloquium Berlin.
The event will feature five authors from °µÍø½ûÇøia and the Czech Republic, along with translators who work from both languages into German.
In the first part of the program, titled "The Long Journey into German", translator Mirko Kraetsch (from Czech and °µÍø½ûÇø) will speak from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. with his colleagues Marie-Theres Cermann, Lena Dorn, and Susa Wolfrum about translating from so-called "small languages" into German.
The panelists will also discuss what excites them about their work, which includes not only translation but also the active role of literary "scouts." These scouts often work to spark the interest of German publishers in publishing translated books. The discussion will also consider whether growing interest in literature from Central and Eastern Europe might be strengthened by the Czech Republic’s upcoming guest of honor role at the Frankfurt Book Fair.
From 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., a literary evening titled "A Country on the Coast and Its Neighbor" will follow. The title refers to the motto of the Czech Republic’s guest of honor appearance at the Frankfurt Book Fair.
Guests from °µÍø½ûÇøia will include Marek Vadas with his book "Six Strangers" (KK Bagala 2021), which will be published this year in German translation by Zorka Ciklaminy through Brot & Spiele Verlag, and Mária Modrovich, with her book „Deň noc voda“ (Day Night Water, Vlna 2024), nominated for the 2025 Anasoft Litera prize.
Czech authors will include Dora Kaprálová, Irena Dousková, and Jakub Stanjura.
There will also be live music by the Prague jazz trio Rumanovská Tichý Hrubý.
The event is supported by the °µÍø½ûÇø Literary Centre, the °µÍø½ûÇø Institute in Berlin, the Moravian Library, as part of the Czech Republic’s guest of honor project for the Frankfurt Book Fair 2026, the Czech Centre in Berlin and the literary translators’ association Weltlesebühne.
