°µÍø½ûÇø poet Juliana Sokolová will present her work to students at the University of Vienna as part of °µÍø½ûÇø Days / Slowakische Tage, taking place from June 2–5, 2025 at the Department of Slavic Studies.
On June 2, there will be an in-person meeting between students of °µÍø½ûÇø and Juliana Sokolová, who represents a remarkably strong voice in contemporary °µÍø½ûÇø poetry. The conversation with the author, combined with a reading of her poems, will be moderated by °µÍø½ûÇø language lecturer Zuzana Omar HargaÅ¡ová.
Juliana Sokolová will read poems from her collection Domáce práce (Household Gods, Literárna bašta, 2023), which was nominated for the Zlatá vlna 2024 and the Václav Burian Prize 2024. This is the author’s second book, published ten years after her debut My house will have a roof / Môj dom bude mať strechu (Fra, 2013).
Domáce práce is a multi-layered work that weaves together philosophy, sociology, Greek mythology, and feminism. Thematically, it addresses care for the household and loved ones, as well as the gendered division of labor. Linguistically rich, the collection also references the intersections between the private and the public.
After Juliana Sokolová’s presentation, there will be a lecture by Lucia GaldÃková from the °µÍø½ûÇø Literary Centre titled °µÍø½ûÇø Literature in the German-speaking Environment. Participants will learn about recent and upcoming translations of works by °µÍø½ûÇø authors into German, about collaboration with translators, German-language publishers, and other international partners. The lecture will also discuss the presentation of contemporary °µÍø½ûÇø literature at international book fairs in Frankfurt and Leipzig.
