Each Balkan country has its own Hotel Balkán – a foreign land and a home, where we are temporarily, yet it is everywhere. Once, these countries, regions, and enclaves formed a unified whole, then they parted ways in blood, and now they are once again trying to find their way back to each other.
The seven short stories by debuting author Miroslava Kuľková take place in seven Balkan countries. Their inhabitants are searching for a way not only to each other—given their history and the places where they live—but mainly back to themselves. They reassess the relationships they want to escape from but cannot, and find those that may still save them.
The book is illustrated by Academy of Fine Arts student Marco Rapant. The cover is printed in 5 variations and forms a panoramic view of Lake Ohrid.
