The novella Noreflects the era of the 1960's, rich inliterary experimentingand heavily influenced by the trends evident inworld literature (particularly bySartre, Camus, Butor, Sarrautand Robbe-Grillet). Johanides's prose was viewed as existentialist, but, as Daniel Hevier wrote, it was, more precisely, "a synthesis of the western existentialism and the Slavic, Dostoyevskyan feeling of tragedy."
