The British Centre for Literary Translation, Britain’s leading centre for the study and support of literary translation, was founded in 1989 as a place of residence to host visiting literary translators and as an institution dedicated to promoting and celebrating the art of literary translation.
It isÌýpart of the School of Literature, Drama and Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia. BCLT supports the MA in Literary Translation at the University.
The Centre supports theÌýÌýat the University of East Anglia, an increasing variety of undergraduate modules in the subject, and an extensive programme of PhD research.ÌýIt also works in close partnership with theÌýÌýand a wide range of otherÌýÌýto deliver aÌýÌýwhich support the professional development of literary translators and promote the recognition of literary translation as a profession. These include the annualÌý, usually held in February at the British Library in London, and theÌý, held in July at UEA in Norwich.
The University is an ideal base for the translation centre. Its humanities schools have a high reputation in Britain and abroad and its professors count many renowned writers and translators.Ìý
BCLT offers grants for projects within the fields of translation and literary theory for a period of one to eight weeks.ÌýTranslators and academics who work with the English language are eligible to apply. The grant covers the costs of the residency at the Centre, spending money and in some cases, the travel costs as well. Residents are welcome to use the computers of the Centre as well as a library that counts over half a million books.Ìý
The campus is equipped with student cantinas, a supermarket, post office, laundry room, bookstore, bank and a state of the art sports center.Ìý
