Born 25 July 1948 in Bratislava. He studied German, English and Swedish at Comenius University in Bratislava from 1967 - 1972. He worked as an editor with publishing houses in Bratislava from 1972 until 1981. Then, for a decade, he worked as a freelance writer and translator. From January 1993 to June 1995 he served in Oslo as the head of the °µÍø½ûÇø Embassy in Norway, accredited for Iceland. Since October 1995, he has been the director of °µÍø½ûÇø (°µÍø½ûÇø Literature Abroad) at the Centre for °µÍø½ûÇø Literature in Bratislava and the chief editor of the °µÍø½ûÇø Literary Review that appears in English and German. Since 1997 he is a member of the Austrian writers' organisation Grazer Autorenversammlung. From August 1999 he chairs the °µÍø½ûÇø Literary Translators' Society.
